A popular Mahatma Gandhi quote illustrates the slow progress of social movements.
I joined the epilepsy social progress train while we were being ignored. Because my life changed suddenly, I did not consider myself fortunate at the time of my first seizure, but life could have been worse. Before we were ignored, we were…

On March 31, 2012, I attended my third National Walk for Epilepsy. This year's walk was the 6th Annual National Walk for Epilepsy on the National Mall. Seeing thousands of people inspired me. Being seen motivated me to do more for our community so that we can connect to all those who feel isolated.
At the walk, Epilepsy Foundation…

My Featured Blog is called "If I Talk About It, Will You Listen?"
For the last year, I started all my posts with the first two words "If I." I developed the idea during last year's walk when I suspected that some people emphasized talking without interacting. As difficult as it is to talk about it, listening is difficult, especially to the reasons behind the silence.
Talking does not necessarily heal, but denial rarely helps. There is power in being heard. Sometimes,…

We do not need thought leaders. We need thoughtful leaders.
I ask a lot of questions. Sometimes, I ask whimsical questions about experts having children. Other times I ask serious questions about how people become experts. I hope you will know which questions to take seriously.
What qualifies someone as an epilepsy expert?
What is the difference between a leader and a "thought leader?" Is a thought leader someone who thinks about…
ContinueBryan,
Trust me this is kinda new to me. You have replied back 2 times and I have been loooong in my answers. I see just looking on your ID name how you talk to others. maybe I can do that but I would rather then contact me first. It's hard not to say what is on your mind when the thoughts pop out and you're afraid you'll forget your thoughts a few hours later. I am not making my issue about ME only. I know there are many many more diagnosis in the past 25 years that what was done the previous 25 years from 1960 to 1985. and 1986 to 2012. Just say in 35 years and the number of cases are 150% more. You know what I mean since 1980. That is why what I believe should be researched and studied, if they ever have it in my lifetime, it should be included in every active study as an add on tests to be done in old study protacol research, as well as a new case for a new person who's ever had a clinical study for the 1st time. Even people like me and people before my who still have seizures who were never tested about this WHO HAS ? should all be tested even if they are 100 years old and have seizures to the extent that can prove it wont kill anybody. Hmmmmm,, Is that why there has been no clinical study or research trials to this day ? As I call it S E C D E P,,, Sudden Explained Cause/s of Death in EPilepsy. SUDEP is a myth.
Shawn West said… Sorry Bryan, I had another seizure and was unable to get back to you until now. So, you are in my back yard. I live here in the mountains.
The high schools here are; Skyline High School(I've had 3 kids go there) and Warren County High School.
My ex wife has blocked my visitation again and I am pretty distraught right now. After everything "they" put me through, seeing my kids was just about all I had left.
Hope all is well with you and yours and remember, I will "carry the flag" and fight this to the end, but what I(we) need is for all of us to stand up and not take this abuse anymore. One(me) can be silenced, all of us, NEVER!
Everyone should read, follow and be very, very scared by my ongoing abuse by the government.
Thank you, Bryan.
Thanks Bryan, I am learning so much. Still battling through my emotions of all of it. But have found just being able to vent to people who actually understand has been a great help.

Sara Pena-Gonzalez said… Your video touched me ever since my seizure on August 4th and being diagnosed with Epilepsy on september 13th I have been an emotional mess scared of having another seizure and feeling misunderstood I have been seizure free since that seizure and Im on lamictal 100mg twice a day. After seeing your video I have decided that instead of keeping all of my emotions inside i need to let it all out and just enjoy each day and realize what does not kill me will make me stronger and I can handle anything.
Yes, I did read it! My next blog post will be in epilepsy, so I will follow your suggestion and also post here on the eCommunity. My site is http://anotherblessedpilgrimage.com. I also use Tumblr. ;)
Thanks for your post, and I feel the same way, so I found it very motivational!
Thanks, Bryan! I found you on Twitter! :) This year I also want to get more involved. I was diagnosed at 14 and am now 27. I find it really hard to volunteer because of my schedule. I also work in a health non-profit. I am really interested to see if there are ways to become more integrated in the online community. :) I'm a little addicted to social networking. ;)
