Epilepsy Foundation

I'm new to Keppra, I've been on 1000 mg's a day for a month and was just wondering who else out there also takes the same amount?? and if you drink alcohol or coffee while taking keppra? and if so what your experiences have been. I feel like the Dr. just put me on this without explaining much about it, so now I have all sorts of questions. I was told I could still drink, although I've been taking it pretty easy. I was seizure free for 26 years (I'll be 28 in a few days), then all of a sudden a month ago I had a pretty scary seizure at work, I ended up in the er. I love coffee and since I've started taking Keppra I've only had it a few times because I feel like the combo of keppra and coffee gives me a crazy caffine crash about 5 hours after drinking coffee. I've also heard that alcohol can lower a persons seizure threshold, so I wonder if it's bad while on keppra to have a beer or two, anybody out there with experience with this? please let me know! thanks! I want to still have some fun with my friends

Got a question for you guys that might be on Keppra. Has this happened to you? Soon after I started my treatment with Keppra and Vimpat I had a problem that I had never had before,

I have always been of the custom of skipping breakfast and just taking my pills. On that particular day I just took my medication and about ½ to ¾ of an hour later lost the strength of my legs, they simply would not hold my weight. I called the doctor and the PA that works with him and is very knowledgeable of epilepsy asked if I had anything in my stomach when I took the medication I told her that just coffee and she told me that I needed something solid in my stomach besides coffee.

It was a weird feeling; I just could not get up. This sensation lasted maybe 20 minutes after that I did get my Strength back. I did check the medication bottle from Walgreens to see if it said anything that this medication must be taken with food in your stomach it said nothing. I told Walgreens this and they said only the manufacture could make the notation that food was required. The question is how do you convince the manufacture that this label on the bottle is a must?

Just thought you might want to know!

Yes! I have been on Keppra in the past. They gave it to me as my only medication and we did not get along. I felt it did not do much good. So they changed it to another medication. Now 2013 I am on Keppra and Vimpat and apparently my seizures have stopped at least for the last 6 months - IT IS A GREAT FEELING-

I was totally off alcohol for 23 years however I never left the coffee I kept having absence sz then major seizures. Eventually it got so out of handle that I saw this epilepsy specialist he put me back o Keppra and Vimpat. A month after starting the medication in the follow up I asked if I could have a beer and the response was YES so long as you do it in moderation. Coffee was never even in the discussion; mind you I do drink a lot of coffee on a daily basis.

Check with the doctor or see an epilepsy specialist. That would be your best bet.

Good luck

i asked my dr. how much he'd suggest i could still drink while taking 1,000 mg of keppra a day, he told me i should be alright drinking 2-3 times a week, so about 4-6 beers/glasses of wine or whatever a week..., I've noticed that after drinking more than 3 or so beers in one night i feel kind of crappy the next day or so, so i'm making an effort to not drink very much, guess that makes me a "cheap date."

Wow, grapefruit juice? that's interesting, never heard that one... I'm surprised that they don't write that on the pill bottle so people look out for it.

I take 2000 mg's of Keppra a day with lamictal. I'm not a heavy drinker, a few beers here and there, no more than (3) 22oz mugs of beer at the bar. It seems like if I drink too much, my head is racy the next day with anxiety. I have no problem with coffee though and I definitely have to have it in the morning. I've had the least side effects on Keppra out of all the other meds I've tried...good luck!

The only item I was told that was toxic with Keppra is Grapefruit juice. I do drink coffee on a regular basis.
