Hi all. Happy Spring to you, too. We're supposed to get rain/snow mix this weekend but my buds are coming up.

FFT, for a raised flower bed over tree roots I layed a piece of ground cloth on the bottom (the kind you normally put on top to hold weeds out), then covered the sides with a roll of thick plastic, then filled in the soil. It's held up for 3 years now. To keep critters out, I arched chicken wire over the top just 2 or 3 inches off the soil, then planted thru the holes. Hopefully you don't have stray cats or squirrels looking for tender bulbs :-/ Cheap and easy! Good luck

Hi,

I'm going to try a raised flower bed this year for the first time.  I'm hoping to have it waist high so I don't have to bend too far.  I know how to build it but how do you keep the soil in?  Do you put a mesh fence on the bottom then fill it with soil?  I'm assuming if you put the soil on just a "floor board" that the board will rot and also rot out the flowers?  Any ideas?  Thank you for your help.

I am so frustrated, John! 2 days of chaos we couldn't avoid, my flowers are fried and Jimmy is so off-normal. I'm listening to thunder but doubt we'll get much rain - not enough to quench my yard. Tomorrow am isn't looking too good for yard attention, either....sometimes I have to be a mom instead of a gardner. I'd never heard of the Tums or Epsom salts! But we did just get 2 tomatoes, fully ripe with no blossom rot! Oh, soooo good!

One piece of advice to Gardening fellows is when planting tomatoes use 2 tums in planting hole when planting! as we do plantt as tomatoes need calcium as we do. Also crops that are alot of water like cabbage.brusselsprouts, watermelon, cucks  use 2 tablespoons of epsom salt, John

even my tomatoes had a hard time this year! no way to stop it unless you had a hot house with black film on it with fans all the time!

Arghh, getting really frustrated.. Trying to post plant pictures and only a link showed up. Then tried to write and every time I hit the space bar it went to a new comment space. Help? anyone??

Tried to say we had to go to buckets in a sunny corner for tomato plants because we found the black walnuts have our yard destroyed for vegetables. Cherries are doing great but the bottom branches are dying off. Others are getting blossom rot or not filling out. Tons of little green ones, but none have made it to ripen. I believe we're in zone 5? Any ideas?
