Epilepsy Foundation

I am a college student and no longer live at home, my parents are still very concerned about my epilepsy. I have had my seizures under control for a year and 6 months (: but the other day I get a call from my mom the first words out of her mouth are "you need to start eating coconut oil, add coconut oil to your diet" this is a complete shock to me for it is not a conversation I expected. I ask her what she is talking about and why I need to eat this, she says its good for your brain and good for your epilepsy.

I have watched a video about it and how it can help people with other problems, but as for epilepsy I am skeptical. I have not found a lot of research about it....

Has anyone else heard about this....or had coconut oil helped with their epilepsy??

I read one person's experience here.  My son is just about to be weaned from the low glycemic index diet but I am still planning to continue use of coconut oil.  There are so many other good things that come from it!

I read about a Ketogenic diet that was helping children with seizures control them! I tried it for a while but it was too difficult.. Although I had success... So instead I just started using 4 Tablespoons of coconut oil every day. It worked... I HAVE NOT HAD A SEIZURE IN THREE YEARS... Knock on wood! Please try it and get off the drugs today... Natural cures are the KEY!!! "

thanks Karen (: I bought the oil today and am going to give it a try....we will have to see how it goes...how much a day do you recommend?? i have seen many different amounts....

I've heard an adult should take 4 TBSP a day.  I don't know if it would be any different if trying to help with seizures, that's what they said for that anti-inflammatory properties, etc.

A friend just posted a video that was mainly about Alzheimer's, but at the end it mentioned a couple other neurological disorders, including epilepsy.  I know this has not been studied, but it reminds me of the ketogenic diet, which has been studied and has success in kids.  But it's extremely strict and not as successful in adults from what I've heard.  I think I will go out and get some coconut oil and when I have an appointment with my ob/gyn in a week or so I will ask her opinion.  It was dumb luck that I happened to find a new ob/gyn who has a B.S. degree in Neuroscience!

You could make coconut oil pops.  I make them for my son.  It's 15g coconut oil and 0.3g sugar free jello.  freeze into sucker mold and eat.  He is on the ketogenic diet and I use coconut oil all the time.  Good luck!

I was going to try this, but have no idea what kind of coconut oil to get. There are so many to choose from. Anyone know if the kind makes a difference?
