I wanted to see if anyone uses Coconut Oil with the Ketogenic Diet.

Aurora's Dietician said that we could switch and put Coconut Oil in her recipes instead of using the mayo and butter.  However she said that using Coconut Oil creates more Ketones so that the kids using it produce more ketones and need there ratio changed. Which to me is a good thing because Aurora would get more food.

I just wanted to hear some experiences with the oil.

Also.... do you use Refined or Unrefined? We bought the Unrefined and it has NO taste at all. its like Crisco.

we use a lot of coconut oil. Jake seemed to respond best to it. Plus he does not like butter or mayo so it worked out well. He gets 6 grams of it per meal.I just weigh it, add a drop of sweetner and freeze it.. But some like to mix cocoa powder and a little butter and sweetner to it for a chocolate treat. In some recipes, you can sub some of the butter with coconut oil. But we are not seizure free... Since she has done so well on the diet, I would be afraid to change anything in her diet. :). Thanks for the recipes.... I keep looking for that good doughtnut you had pictured on your one post! :) P.S. you must use unrefined coconut on the keto diet.

We use coconut oil too on the LGIT and have found it very helpful in stabilizing Elsa's ketones. We give it to her twice a day as a supplement. We rarely cook with it. It also has the added benefit of being an excellent anti-fungal for kids with digestive issues. We use this product, Tropical Traditions.

We were using Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for Modified Atkins Diet with my son. I think it tastes amazing! I used it a little for cooking, and I used it in "smoothies" and to make a little frozen "candy" with the coconut oil, some unsweetened organic coconut, a few slivers of toasted almonds, and a few drops of Sweet Leaf liquid chocolate Stevia.

I found the best ice cube trays that work PERFECT for making little "candy" bites to serve with a meal or inbetween a meal. You can pop them out one at a time from the mold and the ice cube trays can go in the dishwasher!
Ice Cube Trays that work Great for Candy Molds. I bought mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. But, they are on Amazon too.
It is true that Cocunuts are low in carbohydrates and high in fats. However It is highly recommended that you speak with the nutritionist who is working with you in the ketogenic diet to discuss induction of this and by how much into the diet as to not provoke complications.
EF Admin~ In the first post, AurorasMommyVT said that her daughter's dietitian had already told her that she could make the switch to using coconut oil...so, clearly she isn't doing this without consulting with a health professional. She was just asking for other people to share their experiences with coconut oil and for input re type of coconut oil. The wealth of input from other parents who have traveled the path is invaluable re knowledge, support, and encouragement...and often times by discussing in a community of experienced parents/others it actually prevents or solves complications.

Yes, Aurora's use of Coconut Oil has been approved and recalculated into her recipes through KetoCalculator which is also approved (every meal before use) by her dietitian.

Do you use Unrefined or Refined for those candies? I have tasted the Unrefined, and it just tastes like crisco, but smells like coconut?!?!?!?

Thanks!

The Nutiva Coconut Oil that I linked in my post is what I used. It is Organic, unrefined, cold-pressed, extra-virgin coconut oil. I think it tastes good :) Not sure if you noticed that I stick them in the freezer, so they get hard. You can't leave them out though the coconut oil melts at 76 degrees. That's why I like these trays that you can just pop them out of one at a time.
Hi  My grandson used MCT oil ( mostly coconut oil) with his ketogenic diet, it is much healthier and tasteless. The med. insurance pays for it and it is prescribed and sent to him in the mail. MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides and should be used with the help of a dietician. The number to call for orders is 1-800-333-3785. Web site is www.nestlenutrition.com/us. Hope this helps, the keto diet is not so healthy so anything that helps is better. Blessings

The Epilepsy Resource Center thanks you for sharing with the community and we look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
